Work Poker

August 13, 2008

Well, its been a while since my last post, poker has been non existent for me lately! work has been hectic.

I have had 2 work poker nights, and came away un-successful on both occasions, and throwing my money away. I am not saying I am a pro player, but when you get guys that are complete noobies, the are too hard to play against, and I hate playing them! They call you with cards like 2-6 off suited, and win half of the time against your Q-Q. It can get pretty frustrating, and I think I will have to give it a rest for a while, until some bigger money tables come up, to keep away the rookies.

Retired Aussie Cricket legend, Shane Warne is realizing his ambition of captaining an Australian team in the World Series of Poker.

The self-confessed poker fan has found a mentor in Joe Hachem, the fellow Aussie who one the 2005 World Series to help Warne with some poker tuition. Warne said “He’s teaching me about bluffing and when to fold or raise. He’s been almost like a mentor”.

Aussies love to tell tall stories, so I am sure Warne will fit right into the professional poker world. Bring on Vegas!!

Charles Barkley, NBA legend, is back on the Poker tables on July 2nd for a Celebrity Poker Tournament, 2 days after pledging to stop gambling. At least this is for charity, and all his winnings will be donated to a good cause.

The tournament will have a big showing of celebs on show, playing in the Ante Up for Africa, hosted at the Rio Casino in Vegas, the day before the World Series of Poker Main Event starts.

Barkley has had the Wynn Las Vegas chasing him down for $400,000.00 in casino debts, as well as DA fees of $40,000.00. In a recent interview, Barkley revealed he has lost around $10,000,000.00 through gambling.

Lets hope all his experience helps raise money for a good cause.

Work Porker Nights

June 20, 2008

©2008 PKR Pete - Well, as you might have guessed, I am a poker fan, not quite a poker player, dabbling in online poker games. But have yet to sit in a card club or casino on a ‘real’ game of poker.

At work, we have quite a few poker nights, getting up to around 15 seats. Cash buy-ins, top 3 finishers take home the cash, I have had quite a good run, out of 7 games, I have won 4, placed 2nd once, 3rd once, and a 5th place.

Today was one of the wins, small table, small cash, but I played pretty well, eliminating everyone on my way to the win, after a slow cautious start, before turning on the Gus Hansen of old, my aggressive poker player within showed up and gained a big stack and for the heads-up, I was dominating my opponent with 85% of the chips, and finishing him off with AAAQQ.

We have another Poker night coming up in July, with a bigger pot, more seats and hopefully a top 3 finish to get some of the cash.

Next stop, World Series of Poker!!! I WISH!!!

©2008 PKR Pete - If anybody watched the US Open, you would have seen Rocco playing amazing golf, and nearly tipping golfing legend (and my hero) Tiger Woods. He had a chance to win it on the 90th hole of the tournament, but missed the putt on 18, to take it to sudden death against Tiger, as you know, you can’t give Tiger a second chance, and sure enough, Tiger took it.

What I didn’t know, was that Rocco is an amateur poker player, having tried his hand at 2005 World Series of Poker Main Event, an event where fellow antipodean (I am a Kiwi!) Joe Hachem won, taking home $7.5 million dollars. Rocco failed to cash in that tournament. Maybe we will see Rocco going heads up in a final table one day, perhaps against the Tiger Woods of poker, Phil Ivey?

©2008 PKR Pete - Edward Norton, Adrien Brody, Tim Robbins, Woody Harrelson, Dennis Hopper, Goldie Hawn, Salma Hayek and Alice Taglioni battled it out in the Cannes 2008 Celeb Poker Tournament, for the chance of winning $500,000.00 for their chosen charity.

At the end of the day, it was Harrelson that came out on top, outlasting all the other Celebs, there is some talk that the pot was split with Taglioni. Harrelson gave his winnings to environmental group Oasis.

I am still trying to find an only stream of the tournament, sounds like it was an exciting event and alot of fun, if you know where I can watch this online, please let me know.
